I picked out, bought, best book on writing a business plan, and read eight of the top business plan books on Amazon as decided by me!

If you actually don't want to spend time writing a business plan, and you are looking for a justification for your decision either to yourself or to other peoplethen Burn The Business Plan by Carl Schramm is likely a great starting point for you.

Schramm argues that the startup journey is unpredictable, and rather than spending a lot of time planning, we should get out there and start doing things to best book on writing a business plan the business. Schramm writes:. Since the value and the growth for the entrepreneur is in the doing and in the learning - then get out there and do it, and learn as you go. Schramm is deeply skeptical that writing a business plan is predictive of a business actually starting.

He gives an example of business plan competitions:. But Schramm isn't against planning per se. In the book he argues that it is sensible to do at least some level of research to ensure that the business concept is viable. Otherwise we could waste a lot of time going in the wrong direction or pursuing an idea that won't work.

What Schramm is against is the "ritual" of creating detailed, formalised business plans, prepared in detail in advance of the business actually starting, containing mountains of market research and fine-grained financial projections stretching out for years ahead.

Schramm suggests a basic planning process, along the lines of Eric Ries's Lean Startup philosophy, involving an iterative cycle of Vision-Platform-Product Testing-Scale :. He also suggests adopting a process of monthly goal setting and forecasting, and then measuring progress against those monthly plans. If you want something simple and practical, which you can get going with in a day, then The One Page Business Plan For The Creative Entrepreneur by Jim Horan might be a good fit for you.

The book defines what exactly it means by each of these terms, and also gives the reader some exercises for each section to help them articulate each of these, best book on writing a business plan.

It then gives some case examples that we can use as inspiration for writing our own One Page Business Plan. Tim Berry is the founder of Palo Alto Software, the producer of leading business plan software Business Plan Pro. He has been a business planning expert for some decades.

Increasingly, Berry has been shifting towards a more agile philosophy of business planning, best book on writing a business plan, which he shares in his book The Plan-As-You-Go Business Plan and in his book Lean Business Planning.

Berry's lean approach to business planning is to start anywhere, and do only as much business planning as you need to, to the extent that it is useful to do so.

To be able to plan in this iterative, best book on writing a business plan, as-needed way, Berry suggests you need to be clear about and manage two things:. The "flesh and bones" consists of two components, which together constitute the management of the best book on writing a business plan of your business:. You can do some minimal planning and know you are covering off the key points you need to, or go into greater depth to address risks or challenges, or flesh it out to produce a formal plan for an investor or other stakeholder.

Another iterative approach to business planning can be found in Alex Genadinik's How To Write A Business Plan. Genadinik is writing from the perspective of someone who has been a practical, down-to-earth entrepreneur, and now teaches other people to do the same. Genadinik's goal in the book is to help someone write a business best book on writing a business plan at whichever level of detail they need.

So he starts with a three-line business plan, moves on to a one-page business plan, and then helps people flesh that out to be a fully fledged business plan. Genadinik's book would also suit a pragmatic, get-going business person, who wants to follow the best book on writing a business plan of a conventional business plan but without excessive overhead or too much rigour.

Hal Shelton is a mentor for SCORE, a US non-profit focused on assisting entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. As such, Shelton has personally guided over 1, entrepreneurs through starting and growing their business.

In his book The Secrets to Writing A Successful Business PlanShelton shares what he has learned from coaching those 1, entrepreneurs through starting a business and writing a business plan. Shelton doesn't focus so much on what exactly to put in each section of a plan template, but rather on the underlying philosophy and thinking that underlies developing an effective business plan.

Finally, we have Business Plans For Dummies by Paul Tiffany and Steven Petersen. It does not cover actually writing a business plan - as one might have expected from the title.

Instead, it is in essence a book about business planning - the kind of research and thinking that underpin a good business plan - roughly correlated with the sections of a business plan that those thinking tools relate to.

From that point of view, it is a useful survey of business planning methods. But the kind of strategic analysis tools it covers are probably way in excess of needs for most solopreneurs or most people starting a business.

This book is more suited to people scaling out their business than starting a business, or people starting a business in a complex environment that needs some significant analysis and research up front.

People starting a small business and choosing a book from the Dummies series might be better off with Creating a Business Plan for Dummies by Veechi Curtis, which covers the key steps in writing a conventional business plan.

If you are a creative, "right-brain" type person, who would much prefer to use tools like mind-mapping or vision boards to develop your business plan - but who still wants to cover the bases for "proper" planning- then The Right-Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success by Jennifer Lee may be the book for you.
